The Mystery of Death was the second song I wrote for my zombie rap album Lord of the Dead.
Lord of the Dead is a metaphoric concept album where every song is part of an overall story. The theme behind The Mystery of Death song with regards to the Lord of the Dead story is the
point where Gaz and myself have made a run for it outside of our block of flats and have managed to escape the clutches of two zombies. We make a break for it, get into Gaz’s car and drive off.
The idea of the song really is about observing ‘the dead’ going about their daily ‘undead lives’ and how they basically mill around without ever looking at the world around them. Of course this is in fact a metaphor in the sense that it is about observing many of the people we see in society that simply ‘mill around’ their daily life without a care for what’s going on around them despite the fact they are unhappy in their current situation. It’s about how they simply settle and accept their ‘lot in life’ that one could argue has been put in place by others. They have the power to take control of their own lives but instead they simple carry on and moan in an almost oblivious fashion.
This is all brought together with a sound and chorus that could be considered tongue in cheek or ‘hammy satire’.
